Why movement at work

Move more,
sit less

What health research has found about sitting, moving, and moving together.

  1. A full class crossing the floor in lines at Broadway Dance Center, Galit leading on the left

    47.2%

    U.S. adults, 2024

The U.S. guidelines for adults open with one line: move more and sit less. They count ballroom and line dancing as moderate exercise. In 2024, fewer than half of U.S. adults (47.2 percent) met the aerobic guideline in their free time.

U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines, 2018; CDC NCHS, 2026

  2. Dancers mid step together under magenta light, arms swinging through the same move

    1,005,791

    adults in the data

Sitting is only half the story. In data on more than a million adults, the extra risk linked to long days of sitting was not seen in the most active people.

    1

    session, the same day

Per the U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines, a single session of moderate activity can reduce anxiety symptoms and improve some aspects of thinking the same day.

  4. Galit laughing mid move, her class following behind her

    56

    employees, one workplace

In a workplace trial, afternoons after a group walk at lunch were rated more enthusiastic and more relaxed than afternoons without one.

Scand J Med Sci Sports, 2015

  5. The class gathered close after a run, laughing and clapping for each other

    200

    hospital staff

Moving together at work does something moving alone does not: in a trial with 200 hospital staff, short group sessions at work strengthened bonds within teams more than the same exercise done at home.

    Scand J Public Health, 2015

  6. The whole class in formation at Broadway Dance Center, everyone low in the same shape on the same count

    60

    experiments

Across 60 experiments, people who moved in time together felt and acted more warmly toward each other.

When a room moves on the same count, people report feeling closer to each other, and dance researchers have measured it in controlled experiments.

Testimonials

What people say

  • "She tailored the whole workout to my fitness goals and level. I left the workout feeling more energized and just sore enough to feel like I did something good for myself and hit the right spots. She brought all the equipment and the music and was very knowledgeable."
    Netta GrutmanLawyer
  • "She asked really good questions throughout the session, and it showed how much she cared about my overall health and well being. She is a sincere, positive breath of fresh air, and a real fitness expert."
    Julia Blumsinger/songwriter
  • "From day one, she truly listened to me, my body, my needs, and my goals, while still knowing exactly when and how to push me in the most supportive, empowering way. Her knowledge of the body is incredible, and as a dancer herself, she understands movement on such a deep level, which made our work together feel like a perfect fit."
